<Creating and Publishing Web Pages>
You have several options when it comes to making web content. We have used blogs in this class and we have used Google docs, two very fast ways to get information on the web. Each of you also has use of Blackboard for your own teaching; we will discuss wikis and social networking sites later in the course.
However, the "old fashioned" way of making websites is still the best way for making sites if you want full control of the design. To make a website, you basically have two options. You can use a web authoring software program (Dreamweaver, GoLive, FrontPage, Expression Web, KompoZer, iWeb).
Or, you can use a web-based application (Google Page Creator, Weebly, Sitekreator, SynthaSite, Jimdo, Doodlekit, freewebs) that lets you create pages and publishes them (and typically hosts them) for you. The web authoring programs give you more control, but then that means that you have to do more.
(OK, technically you have a third option to code your pages from scratch. Any takers on that?)
To decide which kind of program to use, you need to think about your objectives for your site. For this class, you will be making a professional online portfolio. You should experiment with your different options to see which program makes the most sense for you to use. Do you want the freedom to design your pages to your exact specifications? Or do you want something that is easy to use so you'll be more likely to update it frequently?
