Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the "new" internet which lets users drive content. It's about community, social networking, and collaboration. Many types of sites/applications would be considered 2.0: blogs, wikis, social networking sites, video & photo sharing, collaborative games, virtual reality realms, social bookmarking--almost anything where a user (you, anybody) can make a "profile" and connect to other "members" or where you can "comment" or "tag" items.

We've discussed blogging earlier this semester.

Wikis
Wikis are collaboratively written websites, written and rewritten all through the browser interface. Some are public so anyone can contribute (e.g. Wikipedia). Others are set for a group of users to use and are password protected. Many free web-based wikis are available. Here's a few:

Social Networking Sites
Most people seem familiar with at least the concept of social networking sites. You sign up, make a profile, link in with friends, make new friends, and update your profile regularly with personal news, photos, and messages for friends. The two big ones right now are Facebook and MySpace.  There are social networking sites for all sorts of groups:
http://www.famster.com/--for families
myfamily.com--for families
elgg.net--for portfolio sharing
migente.com--for Latinos
blackplanet.com--for African-Americans
eons.com--for boomers
faithbase.com--for Christians
glee.com--for "gay, lesbian, and everyone else"
asianave.com--for Asian-Americans
See many, many more here.
And, you can create your own social networking site.

Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking allows you to save urls of websites you like with your own comments and tags online. They are social because others can see your bookmarks, comments, and tags. A few sites:

Web 3.0?

Some people suggest Web 3.0 is an internet that is automatically customized to you. So, in Web 2.0, you customize your web experience. In the next stage, based on preferences and habits, your search engine, shopping sites, and whatnot customize to you. Also see:
